Power Poses

I like to watch the Ted talks, so a couple of days ago I watched one called “Your body language shapes who you are” by Amy Cuddy. The main idea of the talk is that your body language doesn’t just effect others but it impacts you. So they did an experiment and asked a group of people to do what they call power poses like the Superwoman pose or the Victors pose for 2 minutes a day and they felt more empowered. On closer examination it wasn’t just about feeling, test results showed that their testosterone levels rose and their cortisol levels decreased.

So I started a week ago and added it to my daily routine of 10 minutes a day exercise, 15 minutes a day prayer and now 2 minutes a day doing power poses. Sounds a bit weird but I stand in front of the mirror in my wonder woman pose (I here you laughing) and I have added a few verbal confessions too. As I am a Christian I use the bible as my source eg. Thank you Lord that I can express love and forgiveness to people today because You are love and You live in me.

How is that working for you? you might mockingly say. Well actually it works I have felt so much more confident in my interactions with people. I have noticed that my body language around others is less closed and negative (arms folded, legs crossed) I have also noticed that people are reacting to me in a warmer and more positive way. In fact a lady today commented that she was glad she talked to me because she felt so much better, and we only spoke for 5 minutes.

Why don’t you take a few minutes to watch the Ted Talk for yourself and give it a try, we all have 2 minutes a day and if it helps to make our lives more effective and make others lives happier, why not?
